“To promote Animaniacs before the show’s premiere, a giant balloon in the shape of Yakko was placed on top of the water tower on the Warner Bros. lot. Unfortunately, no one told Bob Daley, who ran the studio. When he pulled into work that morning, he thought someone had put a bad Mickey Mouse balloon on the tower and ordered it removed. The inflatable Yakko was in place for less than 12 hours, and then popped shortly after he came down. Writer Paul Rugg was able to snap a photo to prove it happened.”

…I hear you, but at the same time, as someone who is struggling to be able to code my own stuff, and not flop around like a metaphorical flounder on the beach, I can see how this is how someone eventually learns good habits.

The problem is that you leave a trail of bad sites in your wake.

I don’t want people to know about my first few years of designs. I’d like to bury them in the desert like Atari did to those ET games.

How you can tell if an idea is "right."

Have a story to tell.

The story becomes the theme, the backbone of the project.

If you don’t define the story at the beginning of the project, you have nothing to which to relate all of the bazillions of tiny questions that arise in the course of creating something.

“What color should it be?”

“How big?”

“What’s the right font?”

All of these questions require the project creator’s answer, but without a story in place, they are disconnected, subjective problems. It’s very easy to lose control over a series of small subjective decisions which inevitably ballons into an unwieldy massive set of subjective decisions, any one of which can be nitpicked and second-guessed.

(I hope none of these are load-bearing subjective decisions)

Worse: you have to defend your huge set of small subjective decisions to people completely detached from your design process.

If it’s merely a debate between your opinion and my opinion, the more powerful personality will win, not necessarily the best answer.

Agree on the story you want to tell at the start, and then everything can be related back to the story. Suddenly all disagreements can be turned into a binary choice between “yes, this helps us tell our story,” or “no, it doesn’t.”
